HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Just a quick post to wish all of my American readers a very Happy Thanksgiving! Here is what I am wearing on the first day of our visit to spend time with family.

I will post again on my regular day (Sunday) with some try-ons and experiments for winter outfits. Hint–you will see some more black and gray. 😉

Hope you all have as much to be thankful for as I do. See you soon!

NO COLOR 2

After all I said about wearing bright colors, you get two posts in a row with black and white outfits!  Some weeks I just don’t have time to experiment, try stuff on, and take photos, so you will just have to see what I actually wore this week, and what I managed to snap quick photos of.

Same velvety pants from last time, but this time with a casual jacket.

I did try one thing, however. In my last post one of my readers asked about what kind of handbag I would use, so I thought I would try out my new brightly colored purse with my plain back sweater. I got the idea for a pumpkin purse from Julia, who is one of my favorite bloggers. She featured her new purse in several posts. Here is a link to the first time she showed it.

The purse is not really quite as yellow as it appears in the photo. The black sweater, by the way, is an old (very old) one, but I love the pointed hem, and wish I could find something similar in other colors.

LEGGINGS

Not too long ago, I wrote a post about wearing things as pants that are not actually pants–chiefly leggings. I showed you some photos of people who were wearing leggings in a most unflattering way! Here is a link if you missed that post and want to read it:

SOME THINGS ARE NOT PANTS

I have one more picture to share with you, just to make sure you know what I am talking about:

No, no, no, no, no.  Do NOT wear items like this outside your home!

Several of you commented and told me that you like to wear leggings, as do I. But there is a right way to wear them. They really need to be worn with a dress or a long tunic. I showed you several examples of dresses in the last post, so today I am showing you some tunic outfits.  So great for winter! And for disguising your midsection!

If you have read any of my posts, you know that I am big on trial and error, and like to share my trials with you, so that you won’t make the same mistakes. Here is an outfit that I tried, but as you can see, the sweater is too short to wear with leggings.  I will try it with some jeans or with a pair of black pants, but I promise you that I will not wear this out in public!

So learn from me, and wear a nice long tunic or a dress with your leggings. The general public will thank you for it.

By the way, the cute red tunic is from Walgreen’s, and I paid $10 for it.  😉 Did you know you can buy clothing at the drug store??? And the blue tunic is from Belk–$13. I really try not to spend more than $20 on any one article of clothing, unless it is something really special.

As always, I love to read your comments, so that I know my posts are not just disappearing into space somewhere. 😉

INDIAN SUMMER plus STYLE COPY FAIL

It is still hot here in Georgia, but looks like cooler weather is on the way. I hope so, because I have some cool-weather clothing that is patiently waiting to come out of hibernation. In the meantime, I am showing you another dress-and-jacket combination that is perfect for Indian summer.

Here is my “tutorial”

I thought I would also share with you a “fashion fail” on my part. One of my favorite fashion bloggers is adorable, and I saw this post and decided I would try something similar. HAHA  I gave up after two attempts, and you will see why.  Jennie did a follow-up to this post where she styles six more cute outfits, so check it out, and please do a better job than I did!

Six Ways to Style a Tunic and Leggings

I am showing you these outfits so that once again, you can see that putting nice outfits together is a process of trial and error. I know I have said this a lot, but remember, new readers check out the blog daily, (or at least occasionally) and they might not know this yet. 😉

There is nothing “terrible” about these outfits (well, really there is) but I can do better, and so can you. 😉

I will be back soon with (hopefully) some COOL WEATHER clothes.

GOODWILL HUNTING

Not too long ago, a couple of friends and I went on a mission. We started in the morning, and returned in the late afternoon.  Our mission?  To try to find cute clothes at the Goodwill stores in our area.

Mission accomplished!

Did you know that it was possible to find great stuff at Goodwill???  And the prices!!!  We purposely went on Tuesday, because in our area senior citizens get 25% off on Tuesdays. Oh my, does that ever make me feel cheap! But I don’t mind being cheap if it means I can buy some awesome clothes for ridiculously low prices. The price for tops was $4.92 before the discount!

One friend had scouted out a few stores ahead of time, so we planned to go to three or four that she thought were good….by good, I mean they were clean, organized stores with a wide selection of ladies’ clothing. There are many Goodwill stores within an hour of where we live, so we plotted our course and got on the road.

Remember I said that we planned to go to three or four stores? HA  We barely made it through two! But oh my goodness, did we hit the jackpot!

Now, you have to understand….there is a definite method to Goodwill shopping. It took me awhile to catch on, but I watched my friends who have had a lot of experience, and after I started doing what they did, I too had success.

Here is what they taught me:

  • Wear simple clothing that is easy to take off, and easy to put clothing over…do not wear bulky sweaters or something with a lot of buttons
  • GET A SHOPPING CART
  • Find out what the “color of the day” is. Any item with that color tag is 50% off
  • Take look around the store, and see where the ladies’ clothing is located
  • Go to one of the sections (pants, dresses, tops, sweaters, coats, etc)
  • You will notice that the clothes are arranged by color, not by size
  • Start looking for anything that catches your eye
  • Work fast. Don’t spend time looking at t-shirts, drab clothing, or brown items,  LOL
  • Pull out everything that you like or think you like, and put it in your cart
  • Don’t worry about the size, unless it is obviously way too small or way too large (If your friends are not the same size as you, pull and put in their cart)
  • Continue to move to the sections you are interested in (pants, skirts, etc)
  • Repeat the pulling process
  • After your cart is full, head to the dressing room
  • There is usually a mirror outside the dressing rooms, so try on as much as you can (like coats, sweaters, or tops) right there while you are waiting for a room to open up
  • Take the rest into the dressing room, and work fast
  • Ask for a friend’s opinion if you are not sure

If you do this correctly, you WILL find something. You need to have an open mind, and be willing to try on a lot of stuff.  If your town does not have a Goodwill with a large selection of ladies’ clothing, (or if you don’t want your friends to see you there….but then again…. you would be seeing them there too HAHA) check out other stores within driving distance. Most metropolitan areas have them in every community.

It does take some time, but what great shopping doesn’t? Plan to go when you are not in a hurry, and don’t take your husband or the kids. It is a good idea to go with a friend or two, because you can look for things for each other, and get unbiased opinions on things you try on.  After all, you wouldn’t want to make a $3.69 mistake! LOL

The friends I shopped with are very stylish and always look great. You would never imagine that they shopped at Goodwill!

Here is a cute jacket that I wore with black pants. I don’t know if you can see in the picture, but it has stripes.

goodwill-stripe-jkt-1-253x640

The jacket and bag were both purchased on this Goodwill trip.

I bet you would not have tried this on because it has shoulder pads! But you need to have an open mind.  Look how cute this is. And after I saw it, I would never remove the shoulder pads. I can see why they were so stylish at one time. The broader shoulders make your bottom half look smaller.

Didn’t get a chance to style this, but it is the perfect jean jacket for me:

Here are the items that I will save for spring:

img_0439-480x640

img_0441-480x640

img_0440-480x640

I bet by the time you see them on this blog next spring, you will have totally forgotten where they came from. 😉

I think our mission was very successful! And very low-cost.  The most expensive item I purchased (the gray wool blazer) was $5.22 .My lunch cost twice as much as that!

I don’t have a photo of it, but my friend hit the jackpot. She found an exquisite Calvin Klein cocktail dress in a gorgeous shade of purple. It looked brand new.

Sooo…..grab friend or two, and hit the road. Good hunting!  I would love to hear back from you if you have any luck.

That way you can see the outfits without having to read all my rambling. JK!!  I hope you will do both.

SWEATER WEATHER

Finally! Nothing makes me happier than the first cooler days after a long hot summer. It is so great to turn off the AC and sleep with the windows open. And of course, it puts me in the mood to wear cute fall clothes! You already know I wear sweaters all year long, but I am still so happy for Sweater Weather!

I spent part of the day working on making outfits from a cute top I got for $4.00 from Wish.com    You know that I will be wearing sweaters! And I will be adding these outfits to my 100 Black Pants page for sure.

Here is what I started with:

I was excited to try it with my new cute boots from Target:

But when I saw the outfit, I changed into shoes.  The boots just did not look right with the pants.

Tried a couple of different color sweaters also:

Which one do you like best?  I’ll be back soon with more fall styles and sweaters! And I have to figure out a way to wear the boots.

BLACK PANTS

ScottE Vest, Red Vest, Travel Vest, Black Pants, Over 50 Style, Over 50 Fashion
Number 3

In my first post, I told you about my favorite Athleta pants. I really do wear them at least 100 times a year. I actually have two pairs….a pair and a spare. If they were the only pants I owned, I could still wear a different outfit every day, and make them work for almost any occasion.

Oh dear, I think I just gave myself a challenge! I should challenge myself to make 365 outfits using my old favorites! That would be so cool! I can’t wait to get started!   BUT   That but is to remind myself that I should stop and think before I make such a big commitment. Deep breath. Okay,  I think I could manage to do 100. So, here is number 3.  I am going to count the first two that I have already done.

I have added a page to the blog (at the top)  and will add outfits there until I reach 100. Don’t look for one each day, or you will be disappointed. I will add a note to my posts to let you know when a new one has been added to the page. It will be more than likely be pretty random, just so you know.  This will be fun.

About the vest. Another of my splurge items. It is a ScottE travel vest with a million pockets. Can’t wait to wear it on a trip.  I will let you know how it works. I got this one on sale, and I’m not sure they make this particular one anymore.  Looks like it has been replaced by the RFID version.

WELCOME TO MY FASHION WORLD

Well hello there! Thanks for checking out my NEW BLOG! I am so excited to have a place to share what I love doing….putting outfits together. Like most women I know, I love to shop and I love to find bargains, but the real fun begins when I get home, go to my closet, and start mixing and matching.

The title of my blog reflects the fact that I am over 50 (waaay over) and that I rarely spend more than $20.00 for any one article of clothing, unless it is a foundational piece like my favorite Athleta pants.

I am wearing the Athleta pants in the photos. They can go from the gym to a dressy occasion. I will post more black pants outfits later, so check back if you are interested in that.
