OLD NAVY DRESS

Hello Friends,

I had an “away from home weekend” so today is just another simple outfit post. I wore this a couple of weeks ago on our first chilly day, which is why I had to add the sweater. I am also wearing leggings, in case you think my legs are naturally that color. 😉

This is an “old Old Navy dress”. Here is how I wore it last year:

If nothing else, I am taking better photos than last year. 😉 Lighting and location make a difference. 🙂

After all my experimenting with the purple top and distressed jeans, I am working on some posts about color and proportion, that I hope will help you. Hope to get that out on Wednesday or Thursday. See you soon!

I CONFESS PART 2

In the first installment of this post, I told you that I had bought several similar dresses, and could not decide which ones to keep, so was keeping them all. Well, a little time and a lot of try-on effort has passed, and I have at last decided to return ONE of them! So, I did actually buy FOUR dresses that were similar. You have seen two of them already.

Here are some of the combinations I tried with another dress:

DSC_0112 (260x640)
DSC_0113 (274x640)
DSC_0111 (312x640)

After seeing the photos, I realized that these two dresses

DSC_0002 (3) (293x640)
DSC_0112 (260x640)

were just too similar and I did not really love any of the looks I put together with the second  one, so I am returning it.

So…the third dress I decided to keep is the one in the featured photo. Here are some of the experiments I tried….not all (some were just too downright ugly to post)    😉

My first try-on in my bedroom. I do like it with boots, but these are brown, and it really needs black.

Okay, readers, time to let me know which of these you like (1-5):

And just so you know I didn’t make up the part about ugly, here is the booby prize try-on:

I hope you appreciate the way I am willing to humiliate myself in order to demonstrate to you that you need to try stuff on.

Just to remind you, here are the three similar dresses that I now own. You will probably see them again, because I have many more ideas of how to style them 😉

BROWN SWEATER

Hello….short post today. I am still working on styling all my dresses that are similar to these:

I am actually thinking about taking at least one back. (But not either of these)  You will find out!

In the meantime, Jean suggested maybe wearing something underneath the dress, and maybe a long vest to disguise my middle, so I have been on the hunt for a long vest. Not easy to find when you are short. All the ones I tried were longer than the dresses and looked ridiculous. Again,if I find something I will show you my experiments and let you help me decide.

My outfit today is just another “trying to look like it is fall, when it is still hot” look.  And I don’t ALWAYS wear a sweater, but what the heck. Lots of cute tops are sleeveless and sometimes they are cut weird (like this one) so that you would have to wear a strapless bra. HA  Not doing that for sure. So cardigan it is!

I CONFESS

Well, dear readers, I confess. I overdid it. When my daughter and her friend were here escaping from the hurricane, we went shopping to get our minds off everything. 😉    It worked like a charm–we had a great time shopping and we all found bargains.

I found some dresses that I liked and I liked all of them and I couldn’t make up my mind which one(s) to get so I brought them all home and I was going to take back at least one or two of them but I didn’t and I feel bad about it but not really because I still like all of them even if they are similar and I could still take a couple back but I don’t want to and now I am going to have to try to find different ways to wear them so they don’t all look like the same dress. Whew!

I feel better. Not exactly repentant, but better. The good news is that they were not expensive (please don’t even pretend that you are surprised). I am trying to rationalize and tell myself that all of them put together would not equal one dress from an upscale store.

I know I am bad about buying something that I like in multiple colors, but I don’t think I have ever bought this many items that are similar. I am not going to tell you how many…you will just have to keep reading my posts and find out. Maybe you will lose count, or maybe you won’t realize that they are all so similar. HA

You have already seen one of them:

And here is the try-on for Number 2:

and OF COURSE I styled  it with a sweater:

I hope you can see my adorable $5.00 necklace that I got from one of the teeny-bopper stores at the mall.

I’ll be back soon with another dress that looks a lot like this dress. 😉  Thanks for reading!

FALL DRESS

This is a short post because as you are reading this, I am on vacation with husband and friends in San Antonio. More on that later. Today I am showing you a perfect dress for warm fall weather. You might not have kept this dress if you tried it on and it looked like this, but I did 😉

And guess what? I added a belt and a sweater. HAHAHA  I know I do this a lot, but it pretty much works for me. Seeing the pictures makes me think the belt made it a little too short, but I will see if I can fix that next time I wear it.

Thanks for stopping by! Be back soon with some travel tales.

SUMMER LEFTOVERS

Well, friends, it is getting to that time of year when it is hot as blazes, but somehow your summer clothes just don’t look right. Since it is the month of September, I would not wear the dresses that I am posting today, but you have not seen them so here they are. You might see them again next spring!

As usual, I like for you to see before and after, so here is a pretty spring/summer dress that I added to as I went along:

BLUE’S SHOES

Dear readers, you did such a good job on helping me decide what to wear with my striped top. Thank you! Today I am asking for help (in the shoe department) on what to wear with another striped top. I am going to wear this pretty summer sweater with white pants or a white skirt, but can’t decide on the shoes. The only ones I am eliminating are the flat white sandals, because they are going to Goodwill. They did not look good in my earlier post, and they don’t look good now. Luckily they were very inexpensive, so I don’t feel too bad about passing them on, but really never should have bought them. At the time, I thought they would replace a pair of white Clark’s flip flops that I gave to my daughter for a beach trip, but no. They will not look good with anything.

So, once again, please vote for your favorite shoes, and those are the ones I will wear. Have to hurry, because Labor Day is approaching fast!  LOL

And the automatic loser:

Thanks for your help! After looking at all the photos, I have a definite favorite in mind. It will be interesting to see if you agree with me. 🙂

AUGUST WHITE

Around here, everyone has gone back to school. That makes it seem like summer is over, but it most definitely is not! It is still hot, and will be for some time, so I am taking every chance to wear white before my fashion conscience tells me that it is after Labor Day.

Today’s dress is another one that was ridiculously inexpensive. I don’t remember where I bought it, but I do remember that it cost less than $10.00–which means that even if I never wear it again, it was well worth the money.

I haven’t talked about price in awhile, but I hope you remember that I don’t like to pay more than $20 for any item of clothing. I am not saying that I don’t, but I am saying that I don’t like to, and most of my clothes fall into that category.

I am telling you this because some fashion bloggers give the impression that you must spend a lot of money to look fashionable. I don’t believe that…yes, you might pay a lot more for a dress than I do, but that does not necessarily mean it looks better.

I will say that if you are working every day, you probably do want to have some quality pieces that hold up well; however, paying a lot for something does not guarantee that. I have worn some very inexpensive items for years, and have had to throw out some things that I paid a lot for after a few wearings.

A few years ago I changed my philosophy to buy more inexpensive items, rather than fewer expensive items. It has worked well for me, because I get tired of most clothing after a few wears, and then I don’t feel guilty for recycling–and my daughters (and Goodwill) benefit. 🙂

Here is another version of the dress:

Aren’t the shoes the cutest? They are Crocs and so comfortable. They were more than $20—I am not always cheap 😉

And thanks so much to all my readers who commented on my striped top outfit! Your comments were right on the money….the white shoes and the mint green pants are NO GO’s…I 100% agree. Most of you liked the red pants, and suggested I wear them with red shoes, so I will wear these pants and change out the shoes for red ones. The blue pants were also a reader favorite, so I will wear those the next time I wear the top. Thanks!

I’ll be back soon with some more white. August is going fast!

WHITE PANTS TRY ONS

Hello Friends,

Today I am back with the first in a series about some of my “experiments.” I post these periodically in the hopes of inspiring you to try things on before you walk out the door. 😉

I have a lot of clothes in my closet, but just because I have something doesn’t mean that it will look good if I just pull it out, put it on, and walk out the door. That rarely happens. Most clothing needs to be “styled” which means that some ways of wearing it will look better than other ways. You won’t know which looks better unless you try on and evaluate.

It can be time-consuming, but not too bad if you do it the right way. This means:

  • Think of what you might want to wear
  • Imagine some items that might look good with it
  • Try different items on (experiment with shoes, jewelry, purses)
  • Take quick selfies (in the mirror is fine)
  • Don’t worry about hair, makeup, or posing
  • Evaluate the photos and see if you can do better

I like to take “try-on” pictures, because I find that seeing a photograph is very helpful. I can usually tell pretty quickly if the outfit is something that I will wear or not.

I have decided to share my try-on photos (which I don’t really like doing), because I hope it helps you to see that some of the things you think you love may not look that great, or that some things that you didn’t think were that great actually look nice.

These are really try-ons. No makeup, hair not washed, bra showing, blurry, etc. I also apologize for the line across the bottom. Have not had time to get my camera repaired.

This session started out because I saw some young, beautiful, skinny girls on tv wearing some really cute earrings, so I went out and looked for something similar. I guess I thought that  pair of $3.99 earrings would magically turn me into a young, beautiful, skinny girl 🙂

And these girls were wearing these earrings with white pants, and I love summer mostly just because of white pants, so I decided to go to my closet.

I will start with the “earrings outfit” even though it didn’t turn out exactly as I had pictured it. I guess you just need to be 26 with a golden tan and long legs 😉

DSC_0127 (239x640)
DSC_0128 (252x640)

As you can see, Number 1 was horrible, Number 2 a little better, and Number 3 was wearable.

After I saw the final version of this

I decided that the earrings might look good with this another top I had tried, even though I really did not like any of these try-ons:

DSC_0121 (233x640)

This is pretty cute after I ditched the sweater:

Keepin’ it real until next time! I will be back with some more white pants outfits soon.

LOSERS

Several days ago, I posted that I was going out to finish my Christmas shopping. I am happy to report that I was successful in that mission! But guess what? When I was shopping for others, I could not resist the urge to shop for myself also. My goal was to photograph some nice outfits and publish a few posts before Christmas. HA

For whatever reason, the things I came home with were just not good when I saw them in the photographs.  And I hate that, because with all the extra things I have to do for the holidays, it is hard to find time to try on clothes and take pictures. Since I really didn’t have time to start over,  I decided to do a “Trial and Error” post. The things you see in this post have all been returned.

I won’t try to analyze what is wrong with these outfits, but they are just not right. I will say that I need to take my own advice and not wear leggings unless with long tunics or dresses. The camera does not lie.  😉

Maybe Santa will bring me some pretty clothes. If he does, I will get back to you after Christmas with outfits that look better than these. I know I can do better!

Happiest of holidays to all of you. I will be back soon after Christmas. 🙂

P.S.  My Facebook account was hacked, and I changed my password. Since then, my blog posts have not been showing up there, so unless you are a subscriber, you have missed a few. I will work on trying to fix that, but so far haven’t figured it out. Another little job that will have to wait until after Christmas!
