REMEMBER THE ALAMO

Hello My Dear Readers,

As promised, today I am showing you vacation photos, so if you are looking for outfits, you can skip this one. Just letting you know….when I am on vacation, I do not spend much time worrying about how I look. I spend some time beforehand planning what to wear, and just let the chips fall where they may during the trip. I just get dressed and go with it….the point is to have fun, not to pose for blog pictures, so what you see is what you get.

We had so much fun! If you have never been to San Antonio, I highly recommend it for a long-weekend getaway. The trip could not have been better.

We stayed at the historic Menger Hotel in downtown San Antonio. So beautiful:

Our room actually overlooked the Alamo:

We took a little boat ride on the river and of course had dinner along the Riverwalk:

Visited the Alamo of course:

and must say, had the best barbecue I have ever eaten when we hopped off the hop-on-hop-off bus at Augie’s:

Did some shopping at the Mercado:

And later that evening enjoyed a spooky ghost tour, but thankfully, did not see any ghosts:

We are big fans of Gray Line tours, so we signed up for one that went to the boyhood home of Lyndon Johnson, LBJ’s Ranch and the Hill Country. Here we are at LBJ’s boyhood home:

The Texas White House has been restored to its 1963 version, so it was like walking back into history:

The tour also included a stop at the “town” of Luckenbach, which is no longer a town, but has the basics (a bar and a music venue LOL):

Finished off the evening with another dinner on the River Walk and a visit to the San Fernando Cathedral, where there is a free spectacular light show:

So, there you have it! Our little weekend trip was a huge success, and a great time was had by all. As usual, I learned so much. You can ask me anything about the Alamo or LBJ or the history of Texas…and I will understand your question. HAHA  But seriously, I do feel like I know a little more about those subjects than I did before I went, because basically I knew nothing, except that there was a battle at the Alamo.

Thanks for looking at my vacation photos. Again, I highly recommend San Antonio if you are looking for a fun place to go.

See you next time!

SUMMER LEFTOVERS

Well, friends, it is getting to that time of year when it is hot as blazes, but somehow your summer clothes just don’t look right. Since it is the month of September, I would not wear the dresses that I am posting today, but you have not seen them so here they are. You might see them again next spring!

As usual, I like for you to see before and after, so here is a pretty spring/summer dress that I added to as I went along:

Here is another:

And here are some outfits that I probably can wear for a few more weeks:

I’ll be back soon with some jean-jacket looks.  Thanks for stopping by!

IN BLACK AND WHITE

In my last post, I showed you a dress that I had bought against the advice of my husband. In this post, I am showing the you results of my attempt to “fix it.” I would not say that the attempt was 100% successful; I should have listened to my husband 😉

In case you have forgotten, this is what I posted before:

And here are my experiments:

Ugh! Just posting so you will realize it’s okay to try stuff!

I guess some are better than the orange-and-black combo, but guess what? I just don’t like this dress, and don’t think it does anything for me. So, my husband was right. Maybe next time I will listen.

Thanks for hanging in there with me as I try to figure out ways to dress better!

WHITE SHOES

Many thanks to all of you who helped me with which shoes to wear with my blue-striped top. Thanks to you, I have put my white shoes in the Goodwill pile, and will not wear coral sandals with that outfit.

Today’s post is a short one. I am showing you another summer outfit (last white one for this year!) with different shoes. The purpose of these posts is just to get you thinking. Sometimes just changing your shoes can make or break an outfit.

Hmmm. After seeing these, maybe I should keep the white sandals. What do you think? I will abide by the majority. Just vote YES or NO.  YES means I keep them, NO means they go to Goodwill.  Thanks!

Also thinking I really don’t like this necklace with the outfit. This is why you take pictures 😉

Still learning! See you soon.

GROCERY STORE STYLE

Today I would like to talk about what to wear when you leave your house to run errands or do grocery shopping. I don’t know about you, but for most of my life, this was not something I gave any thought to…other than the many times I thought, “Oh, I hope I don’t run into anyone I know” (which I always did).

I could just not motivate myself to take a shower, put on makeup, and find a cute outfit to do something like go to the store for a loaf of bread. Well, I have to admit to you that even though I am a “fashion blogger”, I still don’t put a lot into my “errands look.”

However, I do think I have improved! Here is an example of what I normally would wear to the grocery store:

Wrinkled shorts, old stained t-shirt from a production that my son was in several years ago, beat-up flip flops, and no makeup.

I do understand that people are not going to run away in fear from this look, but there is certainly room for improvement. 😉

I gave about five minutes thought to the question of “what could I do to look better that wouldn’t be complicated and would still be comfortable?” and came up with this:

I did add a touch of makeup (and some earrings),but did not wash my hair.

When I saw how much better that looked, I decided to add just a couple of embellishments:

Hey, I might actually talk to my friends in the store now, rather than quickly ducking into another section of the store when I recognize someone from the back. 😉

DSC_0006 (266x640)
DSC_0122 (310x640)
DSC_0121 (341x640)

What do you wear to the store? Yoga pants? Old t-shirts? Cute outfits? Have you ever played “hide-and-seek” in the aisles so you would not have to meet up with someone you knew? Ever been caught? I can answer yes to all of the above, but I have to say that it is honestly no more trouble to wear the better-looking outfit, and it is just as comfortable, so no excuses. I vow to do better!

Many thanks to all of you who gave me good advice on which shoes to wear with my blue-striped sweater! I truly appreciate your input, and as usual, your suggestions and comments were very helpful.

The winner was hands-down the nude shoes, which also happened to be my favorite:

It was interesting to see that not everyone agreed…some people loved the blue shoes, some people liked the white shoes best, and most people did not like the coral, although some of you did! Just goes to show that there is no such thing as a “perfect outfit.”

Once again, thanks for stopping by, and if you are going to the grocery store, please try to look a little better so you won’t have to avoid saying hello to me, because I will be lookin’ good. 😉

BLUE’S SHOES

Dear readers, you did such a good job on helping me decide what to wear with my striped top. Thank you! Today I am asking for help (in the shoe department) on what to wear with another striped top. I am going to wear this pretty summer sweater with white pants or a white skirt, but can’t decide on the shoes. The only ones I am eliminating are the flat white sandals, because they are going to Goodwill. They did not look good in my earlier post, and they don’t look good now. Luckily they were very inexpensive, so I don’t feel too bad about passing them on, but really never should have bought them. At the time, I thought they would replace a pair of white Clark’s flip flops that I gave to my daughter for a beach trip, but no. They will not look good with anything.

So, once again, please vote for your favorite shoes, and those are the ones I will wear. Have to hurry, because Labor Day is approaching fast!  LOL

And the automatic loser:

Thanks for your help! After looking at all the photos, I have a definite favorite in mind. It will be interesting to see if you agree with me. 🙂

AUGUST WHITE

Around here, everyone has gone back to school. That makes it seem like summer is over, but it most definitely is not! It is still hot, and will be for some time, so I am taking every chance to wear white before my fashion conscience tells me that it is after Labor Day.

Today’s dress is another one that was ridiculously inexpensive. I don’t remember where I bought it, but I do remember that it cost less than $10.00–which means that even if I never wear it again, it was well worth the money.

I haven’t talked about price in awhile, but I hope you remember that I don’t like to pay more than $20 for any item of clothing. I am not saying that I don’t, but I am saying that I don’t like to, and most of my clothes fall into that category.

I am telling you this because some fashion bloggers give the impression that you must spend a lot of money to look fashionable. I don’t believe that…yes, you might pay a lot more for a dress than I do, but that does not necessarily mean it looks better.

I will say that if you are working every day, you probably do want to have some quality pieces that hold up well; however, paying a lot for something does not guarantee that. I have worn some very inexpensive items for years, and have had to throw out some things that I paid a lot for after a few wearings.

A few years ago I changed my philosophy to buy more inexpensive items, rather than fewer expensive items. It has worked well for me, because I get tired of most clothing after a few wears, and then I don’t feel guilty for recycling–and my daughters (and Goodwill) benefit. 🙂

Here is another version of the dress:

Aren’t the shoes the cutest? They are Crocs and so comfortable. They were more than $20—I am not always cheap 😉

And thanks so much to all my readers who commented on my striped top outfit! Your comments were right on the money….the white shoes and the mint green pants are NO GO’s…I 100% agree. Most of you liked the red pants, and suggested I wear them with red shoes, so I will wear these pants and change out the shoes for red ones. The blue pants were also a reader favorite, so I will wear those the next time I wear the top. Thanks!

I’ll be back soon with some more white. August is going fast!

SUMMER STRIPES

Today I am showing you a new (very inexpensive) top. I love the fact that it has so many colors! It is hard to decide what to wear with it. I tried it on with several different bottoms and shoes. Which one do you like best? Are there any you don’t like? Would you change up the shoes on any of these? I need to know what you think.

So dear readers, give it your best shot. What bottom and what shoes? If 3 of you agree, I will wear it that way to my next casual summer event   😉   Thanks!

WHAT IS REAL?

If you are a regular reader, you know that I try to keep it real. My reason for doing this blog is to encourage women to dress in a way that makes them feel more confident about themselves.

Today I want to talk about my pictures. The reason I put lots of trial-and-error and what-not-to-do photos on the blog is to show you that there are things you CAN do to look better. Sometimes just seeing what not to do, can help you figure out what to do.

I also want you to understand that one photograph does not define your look; how many of us have gotten depressed after seeing a picture we don’t like, and thought “Well, I should just never go out of the house if I look that bad?” HAHA   Every woman I know has thought that, or freaked over an unflattering unauthorized Facebook post 😉

You will notice that the pictures I put on Instagram or as my featured photo are flattering. Wouldn’t you do the same? But I want you to understand that to get these flattering pictures, I have to try on several outfits, find accessories, take a shower, blow-dry my hair, put on makeup, set up the camera, stand in a certain way, and delete all the ugly pictures.

And I promise you that every person on the internet has to do the same. Please don’t let a bad picture of you ruin your day! Instead, analyze the photo and see what you can learn from it.

Some bad ones:

DSC_0102 (255x640)
DSC_0002 (260x640)
DSC_0016 (319x640)

I laugh when I see these, because I think, “Who on this earth would read a “fashion blog” by this woman?????  And please understand–the fact that I can laugh is huge progress for me. There have been times in my life when I would have cried, and thought there was no hope.

But after a lot of experimenting, and reading about fashion, I have gotten to the place where I can say, “Oh well, it’s just a bad picture. I don’t look that bad all the time.”

Just so you know, this picture:

And this one were taken a week apart:

IMG_4035 (421x640)
DSC_0032 (292x640)

Hmm, I think I will change out the white shoes for some nude ones after reading a blog post about white shoes this week. 😉

And as for the Wet Head photo, WHO CARES??? I was having a wonderful time playing with my Cousin Camp kids. But I did not put it on Facebook 😉

Life is not a blog, or Facebook. Life is for living and having fun and trying to bring joy to others. You cannot enjoy life if you are constantly worrying about how you look, or about how your pictures look.

But I have learned that I love to put outfits together, and it is fun to try to look better….at least some of the time. It is a challenge that I enjoy. I encourage you to do the same, but don’t take it too seriously.

Keepin’ it real.  See you next time. Thanks for reading!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME

Hello,

I’m back! And I’m another year older since I was here last. Sorry that I have not posted in awhile. After Cousin Camp, two grandchildren stayed for another two weeks:

IMG_4182 (480x640)

IMG_4183 (480x640)

and at the end of their stay all my children and grandchildren came to help me celebrate my birthday.

I am just not the kind of person who can manage that much, and do blog posts on the side 😉  But I am back, and happy to be connecting with my “blog family” again. 🙂

I just have to tell you that I had one of the best birthdays of my life…even though it was a big one! If you want to figure out which one it was, read my About Me page and do the math…if you can count that high!

My sweet husband outdid himself! He invited all the kids and planned TWO parties. A daytime one with the children, and an amazing dinner out for all the adults. He thought of everything: private room, balloons, cakes, flowers, wine, cards, gifts (for everyone), food, surprises, decorations, and more. In addition to giving me lovely gifts, my children read sweet notes that made me cry, and my husband shared a photo album about our life together.  I have relived that day in my head almost every day since then, and wish I could go back and do it all again. And I have almost forgiven him for getting me a cake with so many candles! It took all of us a long time to blow them out.

Just so you know, my dress was one I had picked out to wear to the party, and it was more than $20.00, but not much more 😉 And of course I had to get shoes to go with it. After all, it was my birthday!

I finally had a day to take some photos, so I will be back soon with some outfits for you to critique. Thanks for sticking with me! See you soon.
