GRAY DAYS

Hello! I am still in my “gray mode.”  As I told you last time, I spent awhile trying on some variations of black and gray to see if I could come up with any keepers.

In my usual spirit of “I don’t mind humiliating myself if it helps you,” I will let you see some of my try-ons.  Where should I start? Okay, how about this total fail? I knew it probably wouldn’t work, but for some reason, I just had to try it anyway. Please don’t try this at home 😉

And here’s another baddie:

It usually takes more than a couple of bad outfits to discourage me, so I soldiered on:

For some reason, I just kept going with this dress. Here is everything I tried:

DSC_0058 (221x640)
DSC_0057 (263x640)
DSC_0056 (237x640)
DSC_0055 (243x640)

Not really a keeper in the bunch. I finally came up with one I might actually wear, but then again, probably not. I am thinking this dress is maybe not the most flattering in the world.

Sooo….I then found another gray dress in the back of my closet. I have had it for several years, and have never worn it, so thought I would see what I could do.

You know that I am not going to leave it like this. 😉  So guess what I added????

Surprise!

Thanks for reading. I will be back next time with a few more shades of gray. 😉

NEVER QUIT TRYING

Today I would like to talk about trying. The dictionary definition of try is:

  1. To make an effort to do or accomplish (something), attempt
  2. To taste, sample, or otherwise test in order to determine strength, effect, worth, or desirability

Both definitions are important. I believe that when you stop trying, you start dying. No  matter what our age or circumstance, we should continually try to be kinder, try to eat better, try to learn new skills, try to understand others, etc., etc., etc.

Haven’t you known people who just seem to sit in a chair and wait for their lives to wind down? I have, and it is the saddest thing in the world to me. There are so many things to learn and to do in this world, and I hope I never decide that I am too old or too tired to try something new.

In a fashion sense, I see this every day. I see people who look like they don’t try at all; in fact, I would say that a large percentage of the people I see in public look like they got dressed without any thought at all of what they look like. They wear what is comfortable, or what is clean, or what is familiar. I am not talking about people who can’t afford to dress well…I am talking about people who just really don’t seem to care what they look like. Maybe at some point in their lives, they tried, but for some reason they no longer do.

One of the reasons I started doing this blog was to encourage people who did want to try, but didn’t know how to start. I thought maybe if they saw someone who was trying, they might see how the process works, and give it a try for themselves.

If you are a regular reader, you know that most of what I do is TRY. I have no qualifications for writing about fashion. I just decided one day that I would TRY to look better, and every blog post is just about that.

The second part of the definition says: to taste, sample, or otherwise test in order to  determine strength, effect, worth, or desirability

That is what I do when I try things on and take pictures. I am testing to see if the outfit I have in my mind will be desirable to wear. As you know, not all are!

YES, it takes a bit of effort, and NO, they are not all desirable to wear, but I would not know what looks good and what doesn’t if I didn’t TRY, so to me it is worth it.

I have been working on some black and gray outfits, so here are the first few I tried on in my room:

DSC_0063 (249x640)
DSC_0065 (259x640)

I like for my “official blog photos” to be outside in natural light (even though the sun does not always cooperate) 😉  so here is how the charcoal vest outfit came out:

And here is a different belt with the black:

So there you have my version of trying for today. I’ll be back next time with some more. Thanks for reading, and KEEP TRYING!  🙂  🙂

OLD NAVY DRESS

Hello Friends,

I had an “away from home weekend” so today is just another simple outfit post. I wore this a couple of weeks ago on our first chilly day, which is why I had to add the sweater. I am also wearing leggings, in case you think my legs are naturally that color. 😉

This is an “old Old Navy dress”. Here is how I wore it last year:

If nothing else, I am taking better photos than last year. 😉 Lighting and location make a difference. 🙂

After all my experimenting with the purple top and distressed jeans, I am working on some posts about color and proportion, that I hope will help you. Hope to get that out on Wednesday or Thursday. See you soon!

LEFTOVERS

Almost didn’t get my Sunday post out today, because we had a busy weekend, and I have not taken any photos in a few days. But I did look to see what I had that I could show you, so here goes.

The feature photo is another effort at styling one of my print dresses, but I did not include it in the last post. Here is a comparison:

The next outfit is leftover from my jean jacket styling:

Not my favorite, but it was worth a try.

So, these outfits are like leftovers. Keep them around for a few days, and then discard  😉    I have worn worse-looking things in my day, believe me, but neither of these are in my favorites category.

Hope to be back soon with some FALL outfits.  Still hot, but counting down the days until…wait for it….SWEATER WEATHER 🙂

I CONFESS PART 2

In the first installment of this post, I told you that I had bought several similar dresses, and could not decide which ones to keep, so was keeping them all. Well, a little time and a lot of try-on effort has passed, and I have at last decided to return ONE of them! So, I did actually buy FOUR dresses that were similar. You have seen two of them already.

Here are some of the combinations I tried with another dress:

DSC_0112 (260x640)
DSC_0113 (274x640)
DSC_0111 (312x640)

After seeing the photos, I realized that these two dresses

DSC_0002 (3) (293x640)
DSC_0112 (260x640)

were just too similar and I did not really love any of the looks I put together with the second  one, so I am returning it.

So…the third dress I decided to keep is the one in the featured photo. Here are some of the experiments I tried….not all (some were just too downright ugly to post)    😉

My first try-on in my bedroom. I do like it with boots, but these are brown, and it really needs black.

Okay, readers, time to let me know which of these you like (1-5):

And just so you know I didn’t make up the part about ugly, here is the booby prize try-on:

I hope you appreciate the way I am willing to humiliate myself in order to demonstrate to you that you need to try stuff on.

Just to remind you, here are the three similar dresses that I now own. You will probably see them again, because I have many more ideas of how to style them 😉

A DRESS VS. AN OUTFIT

Not many words today, just a visual. My suggestion to you is that if you want to wear a dress, you might need to make sure that it looks put-together.

This post is also a reaction to some readers’ comments. One person suggested that I do not need to disguise my midsection. HA! Another reader suggested pairing a long-sleeved dress with a long sleeveless vest. What do you think?

A DRESS                                              AN OUTFIT

And did you notice that I am NOT wearing a cardigan?  😉   😉

BROWN SWEATER

Hello….short post today. I am still working on styling all my dresses that are similar to these:

I am actually thinking about taking at least one back. (But not either of these)  You will find out!

In the meantime, Jean suggested maybe wearing something underneath the dress, and maybe a long vest to disguise my middle, so I have been on the hunt for a long vest. Not easy to find when you are short. All the ones I tried were longer than the dresses and looked ridiculous. Again,if I find something I will show you my experiments and let you help me decide.

My outfit today is just another “trying to look like it is fall, when it is still hot” look.  And I don’t ALWAYS wear a sweater, but what the heck. Lots of cute tops are sleeveless and sometimes they are cut weird (like this one) so that you would have to wear a strapless bra. HA  Not doing that for sure. So cardigan it is!

I CONFESS

Well, dear readers, I confess. I overdid it. When my daughter and her friend were here escaping from the hurricane, we went shopping to get our minds off everything. 😉    It worked like a charm–we had a great time shopping and we all found bargains.

I found some dresses that I liked and I liked all of them and I couldn’t make up my mind which one(s) to get so I brought them all home and I was going to take back at least one or two of them but I didn’t and I feel bad about it but not really because I still like all of them even if they are similar and I could still take a couple back but I don’t want to and now I am going to have to try to find different ways to wear them so they don’t all look like the same dress. Whew!

I feel better. Not exactly repentant, but better. The good news is that they were not expensive (please don’t even pretend that you are surprised). I am trying to rationalize and tell myself that all of them put together would not equal one dress from an upscale store.

I know I am bad about buying something that I like in multiple colors, but I don’t think I have ever bought this many items that are similar. I am not going to tell you how many…you will just have to keep reading my posts and find out. Maybe you will lose count, or maybe you won’t realize that they are all so similar. HA

You have already seen one of them:

And here is the try-on for Number 2:

and OF COURSE I styled  it with a sweater:

I hope you can see my adorable $5.00 necklace that I got from one of the teeny-bopper stores at the mall.

I’ll be back soon with another dress that looks a lot like this dress. 😉  Thanks for reading!

FALL DRESS

This is a short post because as you are reading this, I am on vacation with husband and friends in San Antonio. More on that later. Today I am showing you a perfect dress for warm fall weather. You might not have kept this dress if you tried it on and it looked like this, but I did 😉

And guess what? I added a belt and a sweater. HAHAHA  I know I do this a lot, but it pretty much works for me. Seeing the pictures makes me think the belt made it a little too short, but I will see if I can fix that next time I wear it.

Thanks for stopping by! Be back soon with some travel tales.

SUMMER LEFTOVERS

Well, friends, it is getting to that time of year when it is hot as blazes, but somehow your summer clothes just don’t look right. Since it is the month of September, I would not wear the dresses that I am posting today, but you have not seen them so here they are. You might see them again next spring!

As usual, I like for you to see before and after, so here is a pretty spring/summer dress that I added to as I went along:

Here is another:

And here are some outfits that I probably can wear for a few more weeks:

I’ll be back soon with some jean-jacket looks.  Thanks for stopping by!
