STYLING A $4.00 DRESS

Yes, you read it right. My dress cost $4.00. As you know, my motto is “under 20” so this definitely fit the bill.

This is from my favorite take-a-chance-and-wait-awhile place, WISH. I have posted about it before, but it is a website that has a lot of stuff that is super cheap and comes from China. When I clicked the link, I noticed that the dress is now on sale.  In case $4.00 is too much for you, you will be happy to know that it is now $2.00!!  HAHA

You usually have to order 3 or 4 sizes up from what you normally wear, but after reading the reviews, I ordered a Large and it is fine for me. I normally wear a 10-12. It is also a bit short for a dress, so if you are tall, you might want to wear it as a tunic.

Anyway…I had fun styling it, so thought I would show you the results. As usual, some looks are better than others. Here are the good, the bad, and the ugly, not necessarily in that order. Remember, I was experimenting, and I was nice enough to document it all for you so that you can learn.  🙂

You can be sure that I will never wear quite a few of these looks, BUT, I did wear one of these outfits last week, so I figured I have gotten my money’s worth!

Thanks for reading. My WISH for you is that you find some cute, inexpensive things to wear.

REMEMBER THE ALAMO

Hello My Dear Readers,

As promised, today I am showing you vacation photos, so if you are looking for outfits, you can skip this one. Just letting you know….when I am on vacation, I do not spend much time worrying about how I look. I spend some time beforehand planning what to wear, and just let the chips fall where they may during the trip. I just get dressed and go with it….the point is to have fun, not to pose for blog pictures, so what you see is what you get.

We had so much fun! If you have never been to San Antonio, I highly recommend it for a long-weekend getaway. The trip could not have been better.

We stayed at the historic Menger Hotel in downtown San Antonio. So beautiful:

Our room actually overlooked the Alamo:

We took a little boat ride on the river and of course had dinner along the Riverwalk:

Visited the Alamo of course:

and must say, had the best barbecue I have ever eaten when we hopped off the hop-on-hop-off bus at Augie’s:

Did some shopping at the Mercado:

And later that evening enjoyed a spooky ghost tour, but thankfully, did not see any ghosts:

We are big fans of Gray Line tours, so we signed up for one that went to the boyhood home of Lyndon Johnson, LBJ’s Ranch and the Hill Country. Here we are at LBJ’s boyhood home:

The Texas White House has been restored to its 1963 version, so it was like walking back into history:

The tour also included a stop at the “town” of Luckenbach, which is no longer a town, but has the basics (a bar and a music venue LOL):

Finished off the evening with another dinner on the River Walk and a visit to the San Fernando Cathedral, where there is a free spectacular light show:

So, there you have it! Our little weekend trip was a huge success, and a great time was had by all. As usual, I learned so much. You can ask me anything about the Alamo or LBJ or the history of Texas…and I will understand your question. HAHA  But seriously, I do feel like I know a little more about those subjects than I did before I went, because basically I knew nothing, except that there was a battle at the Alamo.

Thanks for looking at my vacation photos. Again, I highly recommend San Antonio if you are looking for a fun place to go.

See you next time!

FALL DRESS

This is a short post because as you are reading this, I am on vacation with husband and friends in San Antonio. More on that later. Today I am showing you a perfect dress for warm fall weather. You might not have kept this dress if you tried it on and it looked like this, but I did 😉

And guess what? I added a belt and a sweater. HAHAHA  I know I do this a lot, but it pretty much works for me. Seeing the pictures makes me think the belt made it a little too short, but I will see if I can fix that next time I wear it.

Thanks for stopping by! Be back soon with some travel tales.

THE BEST LAID PLANS

Hello All,

My plan was to continue my series on styling jean jackets. I have a lot more ideas of things to show you!  BUT, life has a way of going in a different direction sometimes, and this week was one of those times. One of our daughters lives in Florida, and happened to be right in the path of the predicted hurricane. After a bit of back and forth, she decided to leave her husband there to keep an eye on things, and piled their daughter and their dog into the car and she and her best friend headed north to our house where they waited out the storm.

After a few a days they headed back. Her husband and her house are fine. Thanks be to God, the storm was not nearly as bad as had been predicted. But as you can imagine, I have not had time to take photographs of myself in jean jacket outfits. HAHA

I’m sure you are sick with disappointment, but don’t worry, I will get back to that soon. In the meantime, I did manage to snap a picture of what I wore to church on Sunday. And again, just to encourage you to keep trying, here is a before and after:

Thanks for reading, and thanks always for your comments. They really make my day.

DENIM JACKETS 2

Today I am continuing my series on styling denim jackets. Some of you commented that you did not think you could wear a jean jacket and that you had given up trying. I hope that after reading my last post, you have started to rethink that.

Here is what I am picturing what you look like when you try on a jacket:

If you look at all like me in this photo, you take your jacket and run to Goodwill. There is nothing at all flattering about this look! But wait! I want you to learn to try things and experiment a little. With just a little tweaking, this outfit turns into this:

DSC_0173 (241x640)
DSC_0170 (321x640)
DSC_0178 (297x640)

I had already followed two of the rules when I purchased the jacket:

  • Not baggy
  • Right proportions

I followed up by applying the other two rules:

  • Roll up the sleeves
  • Don’t button

I then added some accessories, a belt to give me a fake waist, and some cute boots. Good to go!

The other point I want to make in this post is that you can wear denim on denim, but it looks much better if you pair light with dark. As you can see in the middle picture, it is too much to have the same shade of denim on top and bottom.

Hope you are learning along with me. More to come.

DENIM JACKETS

Hello friends,

Several of you have mentioned that you find styling a denim jacket challenging, and are to the point where you don’t think you can wear one. I thought I would research that a little, and try some experiments of my own.

Since I am a visual learner, I looked at a lot of pictures of women of all sizes in denim jackets, and although I might not be the best at analyzing, I did notice a few things. First of all, denim jackets for the most part are by nature boxy. And boxy is not what we want ladies! It is not even a good look for small young people:

I did however, see a lot of people who looked really great in a denim jacket:

Now the first thing I noticed about the difference was that the second set of photos had the sleeves rolled up. Bingo! Rule #1 for styling your jacket:

ROLL UP THE SLEEVES

I decided to try this for myself:

Hmm. I think I’m on to something.

I also saw a lot of pictures of people who were wearing baggy jackets that looked awful:

So rule # 2 must be:

DON’T WEAR A  BAGGY JACKET

The next thing I noticed was that buttoning the jacket was not a good look:

I could not find one single photo of a jacket that looked good when it was buttoned, so here is rule # 3:

DON’T BUTTON YOUR JACKET

After looking at so many photos, the biggest thing just seemed to be getting the proportions right. The jacket should not be too big/baggy. It should not be too long or too short. The bottom should hit you at a flattering place.

You might have to try on several jackets to find one that is flattering.

 BAD        GOOD

See what I mean?  The most flattering look seems to be a jacket that comes to your waist level or just a bit below.  So—

WEAR THE RIGHT PROPORTIONS FOR YOUR BODY

To recap:

  • Roll up the sleeves
  • No baggy jackets
  • Never button
  • Wear the right proportions…bottom should be around waist level

If you don’t have a jacket, here are some links to get you started looking. By the way, the one I am wearing was $19.99, so don’t think you have to spend a fortune to find a good one; in fact, I would start at Goodwill. I bet there are lots of them there. I know I have sent more than one to the Goodwill racks. 😉

Here are a few I found on Amazon. (Disclaimer: if you click and purchase, I will receive a small commission)

Womens Basic Button Down Denim Jean Jacket (Medium, MediumBlue)

Lee Women’s Modern Series Holden Denim Jacket, Gauntlet, Medium

URBAN K WOMENS Long-Sleeve Button Up Denim Jean Jacket (S-3XL)

Riders by Lee Indigo Women’s Denim Jacket, Drenched, M

I think I have convinced myself that anyone can wear a denim jacket, but it might take a little work to figure out your best look. Set aside some time and try on several jackets to see what flatters you. Use the four “rules” I mentioned. If you can’t find stores with good selections, order several online and return the ones that don’t work.

Seems like a lot of effort, but I think it is worth it, because a jean jacket is a very versatile wardrobe staple that has been around for decades and is not going anywhere.

I would love to hear from you if you have any success finding and/or styling a jean jacket. I hope I have encouraged you to do so. If I haven’t yet, stay tuned, because I have been trying on lots of things with my jacket and will show the good, the bad, and the ugly, as usual.  This will definitely be a series!

SUMMER LEFTOVERS

Well, friends, it is getting to that time of year when it is hot as blazes, but somehow your summer clothes just don’t look right. Since it is the month of September, I would not wear the dresses that I am posting today, but you have not seen them so here they are. You might see them again next spring!

As usual, I like for you to see before and after, so here is a pretty spring/summer dress that I added to as I went along:
