Today I would like to talk about what to wear when you leave your house to run errands or do grocery shopping. I don’t know about you, but for most of my life, this was not something I gave any thought to…other than the many times I thought, “Oh, I hope I don’t run into anyone I know” (which I always did).

I could just not motivate myself to take a shower, put on makeup, and find a cute outfit to do something like go to the store for a loaf of bread. Well, I have to admit to you that even though I am a “fashion blogger”, I still don’t put a lot into my “errands look.”

However, I do think I have improved! Here is an example of what I normally would wear to the grocery store:

Wrinkled shorts, old stained t-shirt from a production that my son was in several years ago, beat-up flip flops, and no makeup.

I do understand that people are not going to run away in fear from this look, but there is certainly room for improvement. 😉

I gave about five minutes thought to the question of “what could I do to look better that wouldn’t be complicated and would still be comfortable?” and came up with this:

I did add a touch of makeup (and some earrings),but did not wash my hair.

When I saw how much better that looked, I decided to add just a couple of embellishments:

Hey, I might actually talk to my friends in the store now, rather than quickly ducking into another section of the store when I recognize someone from the back. 😉

What do you wear to the store? Yoga pants? Old t-shirts? Cute outfits? Have you ever played “hide-and-seek” in the aisles so you would not have to meet up with someone you knew? Ever been caught? I can answer yes to all of the above, but I have to say that it is honestly no more trouble to wear the better-looking outfit, and it is just as comfortable, so no excuses. I vow to do better!

Many thanks to all of you who gave me good advice on which shoes to wear with my blue-striped sweater! I truly appreciate your input, and as usual, your suggestions and comments were very helpful.

The winner was hands-down the nude shoes, which also happened to be my favorite:

It was interesting to see that not everyone agreed…some people loved the blue shoes, some people liked the white shoes best, and most people did not like the coral, although some of you did! Just goes to show that there is no such thing as a “perfect outfit.”

Once again, thanks for stopping by, and if you are going to the grocery store, please try to look a little better so you won’t have to avoid saying hello to me, because I will be lookin’ good. 😉

  1. Timely message! I was headed to the grocery store for just two items, as soon as I checked my messages, and must admit, I’ll now swap the cut-offs for Bermuda shorts, and the oversized tee for a more fitting shirt. Thanks, Susan. I think. 😉

  2. Ooohhh I am so guilty of all of these.
I am finding the easiest way to not get caught out was to throw out all my old/unsuitable clothes (sometimes after I have worn them out and am unfortunate enough to catch a glimpse of myself) and spruce up what I have with simple accessories. I am now trying to put some makeup on every time I leave the house and have purchased several new makeup items and I am in the process of learning how to use makeup all over again at the tender age of 60. My husband even commented to me the other day that I look 10 years younger with makeup on – now that’s worth the effort!

    1. Love it! A little makeup can do wonders, and good for you for getting rid of old ugly stuff. Why do we hang on to those things?? I know I have been guilty of it too. Trying to do better. Thanks for reading!

  3. I have to admit I am fairly new to your blog but you quickly
are becoming a favorite. Your sense of humor and your positive way of looking at life brightens my day, as well as
many others I am sure. Thank you for also not being afraid
of color and not forcing Fall fashion on us when our temperatures are close to 90 degrees.
    My best to you, Dawn

  4. What a great topic Sue! I sometimes just put on earrings and feel better. Yes, I’ve hidden from neighbors and I’m always afraid I’ll run into an old boyfriend! Ack! Can you imagine? Anyway, you show it doesn’t have to be a lot of thought or money to look a little bit polished. Really, I think it’s mostly about losing the t-shirt. No one besides teenagers look good in them. I have to say I like the nude shoes the best too. The white pair looks dated. Isn’t that weird? I wouldn’t think so but when I saw them on you I just thought of my mother in law. I’m just catching up on some of my favorite blogs, like yours, since my life is calming down a bit. I’ll be by later this week. Happy Monday!

    1. Thanks, Julia! At least I don’t have to worry about running into old boyfriends. The only way they see me is on Facebook, and I am very particular about what photos go on there. LOL Totally agree about the t-shirts, and am starting to think that about the white shoes also. As of now they are in the Goodwill pile, but haven’t actually made it out the door yet. We’ll see! Can’t wait for more posts from you. 🙂

  5. I’m laughing at the concept of not looking nice at the grocery store. I’m 68 and retired so most of my getting out of the house are very mundane errands, so those ARE my dress up days……makeup and good outfits. It’s when I’m at home with no makeup that I scare the cat.

I second the anti t-shirt movement for us gals. They are just big, flappy things with no shape whatsoever.

But all of this anti white sandal talk is just breaking my heart. I love me some white shorts with white sandals and a really cute top. It always makes me feel like I’m at a beach resort, which I sorely need as I live in the desert.

  6. Luckily I don’t have a cat 😉 And my mind is not made up about white shoes. Maybe I just need the right ones.

  7. I agree with you completely that it doesn’t take any more effort to put on the nicer outfit. Although, I am the kind of person who gets up, showered, make up on, and dressed just in case I have to go somewhere…sometimes I spend the entire day in my house wearing a cute dress. But whatever. It’s how I am comfortable! You look great in the upgraded outfit and it is perfect for errands! Thanks so much for linking up with me.
