HOW NOT TO LOOK FRUMPY

frump-y   (of a woman or her clothes) dowdy and old-fashioned. Synonyms: dowdy, frumpish, unfashionable, old-fashioned, drab, dull, shabby, scruffy.     Powered by Oxford Dictionaries   Oxford University Press

I hope that does not describe you! We are all guilty of looking frumpy at times, but it should not be an everyday thing. No one needs to look that way on a regular basis. No matter what size, shape, or age you are, you do not have to look  drab, dull, homely, old-fashioned, or shabby.

I learned to dress in more flattering styles by reading blogs and fashion magazines, watching makeover shows, and photographing myself in the mirror with my iPhone. There is nothing like seeing a picture of yourself to see what kind of an impression you are making!

This started several years ago when I was packing for a vacation. I was having a hard time deciding what to pack, because I really did not want to see bad pictures of myself. My husband likes to take a lot of vacation pictures, and I dreaded seeing bad ones, so I got the bright idea to photograph outfits ahead of time to make sure they looked okay.

One reason I dreaded seeing them was that whenever I see a bad picture, I never wear that outfit again! Maybe that’s why I like to buy inexpensive clothes.

I can’t believe I am doing this, but hopefully these bad pictures will help you. Here are some example of ways to look frumpy.  Do NOT copy them!

Wear clothes that are not flattering and show your figure flaws:

Frumpy clothes, unflattering

Wear clothes that are old-fashioned looking and too long:

Frumpy dress, unflattering clothes

Wear shirts that are too small with boxy jeans:

Frumpy, shirt too small, jeans, unflattering clothes

Wear unflattering shirts AND wrinkled clothing:

Frumpy clothing, unflattering, shorts

I could post a lot more (like some of my old vacation photos), but that’s all I can stand to look at for now! I hope you get the idea.

You can look frumpy if you wear clothes that are too big, or too small, or that have been in your closet since the last century. Don’t laugh…I know you have something from 1999 hiding somewhere in the back…hopefully hiding in the back and not set out on a chair to wear to work tomorrow!

WHERE’S THE CHEAP STUFF?

When I started this blog, I told you that I don’t like to pay over $20 for any one item, and then proceeded to give you links for items that were mostly over $50!  Well, the title of the blog is Over50under20, and as you know, the over 50 part was supposed to be about my age.  I have been feeling bad about not doing anything about the Under 20 part, so today I will share with you some of my recent purchases. You will most likely see them show up later in outfits.

I have included the price and where I purchased the item, but the purpose is not for you to try to find the exact item at the exact price at the exact store.  The purpose is to encourage you to be creative, and find whatever bargains are available in your area. They are there….waiting for you…..go find them.

Happy shopping!  I would love to hear from you if you find a great bargain.

BLACK PANTS

ScottE Vest, Red Vest, Travel Vest, Black Pants, Over 50 Style, Over 50 Fashion
Number 3

In my first post, I told you about my favorite Athleta pants. I really do wear them at least 100 times a year. I actually have two pairs….a pair and a spare. If they were the only pants I owned, I could still wear a different outfit every day, and make them work for almost any occasion.

Oh dear, I think I just gave myself a challenge! I should challenge myself to make 365 outfits using my old favorites! That would be so cool! I can’t wait to get started!   BUT   That but is to remind myself that I should stop and think before I make such a big commitment. Deep breath. Okay,  I think I could manage to do 100. So, here is number 3.  I am going to count the first two that I have already done.

I have added a page to the blog (at the top)  and will add outfits there until I reach 100. Don’t look for one each day, or you will be disappointed. I will add a note to my posts to let you know when a new one has been added to the page. It will be more than likely be pretty random, just so you know.  This will be fun.

About the vest. Another of my splurge items. It is a ScottE travel vest with a million pockets. Can’t wait to wear it on a trip.  I will let you know how it works. I got this one on sale, and I’m not sure they make this particular one anymore.  Looks like it has been replaced by the RFID version.

SINCEREST FORM OF FLATTERY

dsc_0050-2-768x1713

We have all heard the saying that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Today I would like to share with you the outfit that was inspired by the awesome blogger who inspired me to start this blog. I guess I am imitating her in more ways than one! I hope she is flattered.

She is much more disciplined than I will ever be.  She posts an outfit EVERY DAY! I love the fact that she uses a lot of color, and that she always has cute shoes.  She recently had a post about shoes, so be sure to look for that. This link is for the outfit that I tried to steal.

Please notice where my cute top was purchased, as was by the way, the adorable REVERSIBLE bag, which was a whopping $16.00.

I have had the pants for awhile. Again, these are in the category of “foundational” (I am pretty sure that is not really a word). They are Peter Nygard slims, and I think they are about $60.  But any cute white pants or capris would be fine.

I would be very flattered if you tried to copy this look. If you do, please send an email to  Blog5020@aol.com and include a photo.  I will post it on the Reader’s Outfits page.

WELCOME TO MY FASHION WORLD

Well hello there! Thanks for checking out my NEW BLOG! I am so excited to have a place to share what I love doing….putting outfits together. Like most women I know, I love to shop and I love to find bargains, but the real fun begins when I get home, go to my closet, and start mixing and matching.

The title of my blog reflects the fact that I am over 50 (waaay over) and that I rarely spend more than $20.00 for any one article of clothing, unless it is a foundational piece like my favorite Athleta pants.

I am a visual learner, so a lot of my posts will be photo comparisons like these:

I am wearing the Athleta pants in the photos. They can go from the gym to a dressy occasion. I will post more black pants outfits later, so check back if you are interested in that.
